Guilloché, pronounced gee-oh-SHAY, is from the French word meaning "engine turning" describing "engine turning patterns" and refers to an ornamental pattern. The technique as it pertains to jewelry making involves carving a design into a base metal then adding a hand painted pattern and enamel. The machines are no longer made. Faberge was the most famous designer to use the method. The popularity was revived in the 1940s and 1950s.
